If we had to pick one single Brighton event that we feel encompasses all that’s amazing about our city, it would have to be Artists Open Houses. There’s inspiring makers, quirky houses and a whole lotta surprises to uncover.
This month we’ve cleared out weekends to tick off as many Open Houses as possible. Here’s just 6 (all on different trails) that we’ll be heading to between now and 29th May. Comfy shoes, cash and brochures at the ready!
The Stanley Road Store
On the Beyond The Level Trail and showcasing the work of 25 artists – both new and well-known, we’re pretty excited about visiting The Stanley Road Store. Expect to see amazing creations like quirky, recycled lights from Lost and Foundry, rock n roll embroidery by Vintage Mad by M and kitsch felt awesomeness from Lizzie Needles to name but just a few. There’s also a plant shop in the garden.
25 Stanley Road, Brighton, 11am -6pm
“Think intoxicatingly fun and vivid snapshots of utopian wonderlands, filled with women, animals, a pure, infinite sense of glamour and perfect freedom and you’re almost there,” the brochure reads. “With her intricately constructed, dreamlike sensoryscapes, Ruth has the world of make-belief sassiness, vivacious colourways and grace notes in kitsch at her feet, gold VW Beetle included.” Need we say more? We can’t wait to visit Ruth’s new collection of paintings and prints, it sounds ridiculously up our streets!
Flat 1 (Ground Right), 4 Brunswick Square, Hove, 10am – 4pm
Brighton Etsy @ Junkyard Dogs
Y’know we love the Brighton Etsy creatives, so put some of our faves in a studio and it’s guaranteed to feature highly on our hotlist. Find illustrations from Sarah Edmonds, papercutting from Porkchops Papercuts, prints and jewellery from Oh Someday, prints and pins from hello DODO and loads more.
142-143 Edward Street Brighton, 10am – 10pm
11 Rugby Road
Adam, Dan and Egg the pug are back with their eclectic collections of ceramics, design, jewellery and gifts are back. Always a beautiful open house to visit (so much so it was runner up for Best Open House last year!), allocate a good chunk of time to explore this Aladdin’s Cave of homemade wares.
11 Rugby Road Brighton, 11am -6pm
Not only a lovely open house filled with a varied range of cool and quirky artists, but also a place to head for workshops on the lawn! Join a workshop by Loveluck and Morley on Sunday 14th May from 12 noon to 3pm to make a silver ring or a personalised silver or copper bangle. Or on Sundays, Mosaic Mad Romans will be providing mosaic workshops between 12 noon to 3pm for all ages. No booking necessary!
338 Queen’s Park Road Brighton, 11am-5pm
OK, we admit, the name hooked us in. But with exhibitors such as Atelier Stella (whose cute pots we’re obsessed with!), MC Cready Bags and Viva Los Vegan Cafe, Flamingo House sounds pretty damn fabulous indeed!
14a Wilbury Road Hove
