The cupcake business is booming, and these frosted fondants appear in almost every cafe in Brighton. So much so, that people will pay well over that £1 mark to sit in a well-decorated cafe with a cuppa and a natter. And we’re not blaming them… we will too! The cupcake phenomena is a bit of mixing the old with the new… baking might remind you of something you did in your childhood, but the creativity put into today’s cupcakes brings a new element to the beloved sugar treat. Recent trends are finding women turning towards more traditional pursuits of baking, knitting and sewing… so embrace the cupcake and make it a date. Whether it be with a friend who’s visiting you in the wonderful city, or dragging your not-so-keen boyfriend to learn a bit of baking 101, why not learn the art of the modern cupcake?

  • Prices start from £35 for a two-hour class
  • Private classes are also available for hen parties, birthdays or large group team building.
  • You don’t have to be an experienced baker to have a go
  • You get to take home/EAT the delicious delights you cook up after class… and practise them again later!

Situated in the heart of the Lanes, Angel Food Bakery and Kitchen bakes delicious cupcakes, cakes, and other sweet treats every day of the week. Cupcakes will change on a daily basis, so it always leaves you wanting to go back for more. But as well as some sweet treats available to buy, visitors can make, bake and decorate the perfect treat in their kitchen studio. The occasion can be as simple as wanting to improve your baking skills, learn a new hobby, or exploring Brighton that bit more.

Their new class programme is extensive, ranging from the simple cupcake decor class at £35, to the more extravagant ‘handbag cake’. Yes ladies, their brand-new handbag cake class is slightly pricey at £145, but will teach you how to create your own take on one of the most popular cakes around. Not only baking, but carving, crumbing, covering and creating textures. It’s a whole NEW level of cake design, and maybe one for further on down the line.

With over 15 class options to choose from (including pastry and bread-making), we chose three that took our fancy… and here’s what you’ll get:

Cupcake Décor (£35 for two hours) – For this class, you’ll be shown how to make buttercream frosting which is to die for in various flavours, as well as piping and knife techniques. You’ll get 12 cakes to decorate with your choice of sprinkles, as well as getting to take them home in a special gift box.

Macaroons (£45 for three/three and a half hours) – Another sweet phenomenon hitting the streets is macaroons. Learn how to bake the perfect, colourful, ‘melt-in-the-mouth’ macaroons during this class. You’ll be taught using household equipment and accessible ingredients to be sure you can use your skills at home!

Cake Pops (£40 for three hours) – They might seem tricky, but no experience is needed for the cake pop class. Create balls of baking sensation in any flavour and add frosting, melted chocolate or candy melts. They make the perfect gift once you’ve got the hand of it, so be inspired and learn the craft!
